The use of silica gel in transformers

One of the causes of failure and reduction of life of transformers is the entry of moisture into their housing and the effect of this moisture on the transformer oil. Silica gel is a substance that consists of silicon and oxygen and has the formula SiO2. The main use of silica gel is as a dehumidifier. This material has a high ability to absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. Silica gel is usually in the form of round grains that are used in various industries to absorb moisture.

The best silica gel that is suitable for use in transformers is water silica gel. This silica gel has an indicator and changes color when it absorbs moisture. Based on this color change, it can be understood that the silica gel needs to be replaced or regenerated.

The use of silica gel in trans

A transformer is a piece that usually consists of two separate coils, which are usually wound on a metal core (which can be of different materials). Transformers are divided into two categories: step-up and step-down. In step-up transformers, the output AC voltage is higher than the input AC voltage, and vice versa in step-down transformers.

In transformers, the entry of air containing moisture causes the transformer oil to lose its physical and chemical properties over time. This issue reduces the performance of the transformer. One of the important reasons that the useful life of transformers in our country is short is the entry of moisture into the transformer. This becomes more important especially in areas with more humidity.

Silica gel is a substance that must be placed inside transformers to increase the lifespan of them to remove moisture from the air entering the transformer. This moisture changes the properties of transformer oil and eventually damages the transformer. The silica gels used for this application can be easily replaced. However, to reduce the cost, these silica gels can be regenerated. By applying a special thermal process, it is possible to remove the moisture absorbed by the silica gels and reuse them as absorbents.
